  1. Liam—the whole book thing has undergone a few creative revisions, shall we say. The whole biography-with-a-PES-theme thing bored the shit out of me in the end, so it’s a little different now.

  2. Paul—I can’t believe I’m getting boots after every single won match. It’s almost a relief to lose one just so I don’t have to sit and watch the game autosave (I’ve left it on) and load up the secretary telling me I’ve got another pair. Almost certainly an unintended side-effect of the patch. What kind of testing process did the patch go through, and are we going to get a fix? Is this going to happen forever now?

  3. Uncle Turf—well it was an early concern with PES2013—is it too easy compared to the marathon that most of us had just come through?—and it might turn out to be the case. As tomorrow’s post will show, I’ve made some startling progress just with the meagre squad I have now (avg. high-80s OVR). Still on Superstar, 1-bar.

I dislike House Rules, and expect the game (any game) to be all it can be out of the box. As soon as things get towards a House Rules-y kind of place, that’s me and the game usually finished with. I’m a long way from that zone yet though.

  4. John—struggling to find good players in the transfer market isn’t an issue if you’ve kept the good ‘uns out of the Defaults & Youths. (Admittedly it’s hard not to have kept them, with the transfer market seeming so tricky this year.)

I’m finding the Europa League suspiciously easy this year. Not like a true European night at all, most of the matches. Hmmmm.

  5. I’m hoping that receiving boots after a win will stop at some point, it cant go on forever surely…. it would be nonsensical to have 100 pairs of boots when you can only have a max squad size of 32?!

  6. Paul—a good glitch knows no logical boundaries! A virtual locker such as the one these virtual boots are going into could be infinite, or practically so. I’m fascinated now to see if it really can go on forever.

  7. NG – interesting comment about the Euro League being easy – as you know I felt like I was handed the cup on a plate whilst struggling to stay up. With all MLs there is undoubtedly a tipping point in player abilities, after which you remain a pretty permanent fixture in the top half at least. It just feels like it’s come very early this year. I’d almost feel like starting a parallel career to see what could be different but we have got some very closely related campaigns on here, featuring many of the same players and up n down experiences, so I don’t think much would change. Maybe I’ll be playing Arkham City and the other games I’d set aside a bit sooner than expected.

  8. Erm….. Jon murphy has just posted on the Konami Facebook page that details of the forthcoming Patch v1.03 will be available soon!!

    Another new patch!!?!?!?!?

  9. Uncle Turf — I feel the game is not as tough this time either. I finished season two and ended up winning the Premiership, scoring over 100 goals in the process. It was a number of seasons in PES 2010 before that happened for me.

I didn’t run away with the league — I squeaked into 1st place after the second-to-last week and held on, but I’m actually thinking about trying something higher than Professional — something I haven’t done in forever.

  10. I’m sure I remember it taking four or five season to challenge and maybe win a few trophies on PS2 Pes’s including 5/6. Maybe we’re all just battle weary from 2012.

  11. Uncle Turf—I wouldn’t say ‘easy’ re. the Europa, just ‘not hard’. Not as hard even as the lesser games in the Premier, for sure. Harder than D2. A weird one.

  12. Paul—I would bet money there’s a fix for the torrent of boots.

  13. PhantomTollbooth—just go up to Superstar and have done with it. I’d skip Top Player if I were you—the game’s far too frantic on that level.

  14. John—PES2013 is pretty much a resumption of PES2012 with a few weeks off at most. ‘Battle-hardened’ would be more accurate to say than battle-weary—still enjoying the game.

  15. Apparently the patch is a result of the recent official Konami feedback survey so who knows whats in it, will be fascinating to see the details soon.

How are injuries for people? I only have the 1million pound doctor and so far I’ve had numerous injuries but none for ever more than 1 week.
    And still no penalties!!! ever!!

  16. Paul—patch sounds intriguing, wonder if you could point me to a condensed version of exactly what was fed back to Konami in that survey (or do you know yourself off the top of your head?)…

I’ve had 4 penalties in all six seasons so far. I can remember each one individually. The 4th came just this morning, with Uncle Turf’s penalty king, Minandinho—who also scored two stunning goals in back-to-back matches that I’m still smiling about now. Replays tomorrow.

  17. 4 penalties in 6 seasons is still very unrealistic, but I’ve had NONE!!!
I seriously do think being awarded penalties is broken, as I have had over 25 clear cut occurances of where I have been tripped, slide tackled, pushed, etc in the box and its a clear penalty, even slow mo replays show there was absolutely no contact with the ball yet nothing is ever given.
Its the one thing that’s grating me so much about the game right now.

The main gist of all the feedback to Konami that I have seen, in terms of what people wanted patching most was:

    – Goalkeepers (responsiveness, and how they react to floaty shots and parry loose balls back into open play)
    – Scripting (to be toned down)
-Player cursor selection (not responsive or logical enough)
    – general awareness of players both CPU AI and player to react to loose balls
    – Referee’s and inconsistency in decisions
    – Form arrows (unrealistic and inconsistent)

That’s the main bulk, i wouldn’t for one second imagine Konami have pleased everyone though

  18. Paul—if even one of those categories is addressed I’ll be stunned, as it would have an immediate and radical impact on the nature of PES2013 as a whole. One man’s ‘broken’ is another man’s ‘unfair but I like a challenge’ is another man’s ‘what’s the problem?’. It’d be completely unprecedented—and not universally welcome in any case.

Of course, whatever the patch is, even if it contains nothing at all (which would be an interesting social experiment), we all know how it will affect people’s perceptions post-patch. Everyone except ME! Bwahaha, etc.

  19. Hmm, some points I recognise there Paul and some I don’t. Early on I was furious about the keeper walkabouts/parrying to strikers/general pump fist bollocks but Nomkis is now a great keeper, without quite being the entirely trustworthy pair of hands you get with say Buffon. Penalties have always been ok for me, and as NG said now I have my penalty king. Not so many recently but that’s probably due to shooting outside the box so often. Strongly agree with the cursor one – I have found that very slow, and at times actually impossible to transfer to the one I want. Form arrows, like the team strategy stat, are just broken. I would add the pinging of woodwork after the 3-4 goal mark, the nerfed final ball/passing in last third on zero, the AI GF/GA still, and the yellow/red card balance – if not a sending off when hacked from behind when through on goal then why give it for a minor push on the halfway line?! However, all said would I prefer these over middle goal shooting….every day of the week.

  20. Started season 5 last night and hit 13 goals in my first three games. It was just to easy and no fun so i have put it on the back-burner for now and started a South American ML with defualts on SS has any1 else started one yet?

All the old favs can be found Irjescu, Gallezca, Castillios, Jaric, Niehlander all under some unprenoucable Komami made up Brazilian names. But no Minadhinio!!! instead you get a very handy SS 82ovr called Allejo but i think Konami were having another luagh at us by making him 35 and with 60 stamina, 60!?!?!
I good youth CB 72ovr called Bezquerangua(Nouiegh) Beckenbauer anyone?
No decent CF will be a problem, Wielghan is in the youths but i didn’t like him first time round, so i have spent the last hours and half searching for signing.
only played 2 friendlys so far but loving playing with shit players again!

  21. Max – I’m planning on doing the South American ML so will be interested to read how you get on. Have you changed your OF?

  22. Cook- I haven’t installed a OF i’m playing version 1.0 data pack 2.0.

Forgot to mention that one of my fav early signings the little terrier Duffy is back! in the youths with 95 expolsive power and 88 tenacity, hes actually in a much taller/bigger body now so maybe he will become one beast of a DFM that is slight build always stopped him being.

  23. @NG — I may play one more season at Pro to see what the Champs League feels like on this level, but I very well may end up playing on Superstar. Never thought I would say that, but then again, that’s the point of being able to change the difficulty in the middle of your ML career, right?

  24. Uncle Turf—if Konami introduces wholesale gameplay changes in 1.03 of the kind mooted in Paul’s list below and in yours, I will eat my figurative hat. I just cannot see any of it happening. Scoreline Management is at the root of nearly everything classed as an ‘issue’ in PES gameplay. Many assume that—for example—slow player reaction times to loose balls are sloppy game design. The exact opposite is true, IMO: that issue, and every other ‘issue’, are all consciously crafted to play their part in the overall machinery of the gameplay and make the game what it is for better and worse. Perhaps the cursor change issue might be something they’ll fix. All the post-hitting and other stuff? I’ll eat every hat going…

  25. NG – not for one minute was I suggesting it was a fix list – if they can’t even tweak the bloody coach bug then there’s no way it’ll be that, they’ll already be working on 2014. It’s the same the world over with car faults, houses, etc – once they move onto the next design they forget about the existing one. It was simply my take on what is wrong.

Mind I wish I had a hat when you said that about the default names…

  26. Max—the PES2012 Defaults are hiding out in South America? All the same physical models, attributes, skills, and everything?

  27. Phantom Tollbooth—I’m nowhere near any kind of out-and-out comfort zone on Superstar yet, but it is easing up quicker than it ever did for me on PES2012. Remember I played PES2012 for 18 seasons right up to the threshold of PES2013, as did many of the others finding things easy/easier now. That is undoubtedly a factor.

  28. Nothing dramatic in Jan for me – Bothroyd still the best option in my youth team. I took so few last year that there are hardly any new ones in there. Minandinho’s contract came up – another 4 years at 5m per year, no-one else wanted more than 2m. Lots of free agent 16/17 y.o’s. Got Kaka. If all stick together my next gen front 5 will be Scholes, Totti, Kaka, Klose and Villa.

  29. Am threatened with the sack if i dont win my next game.
If i lose i will do a league with my old ML team and enjoy the last 2 weeks before Pro Evo 2013

  30. NG- kind of… Most players have exactly the same stats and positions as last years defualts in both CL master league and South american ML with a few new players sprinckled in. I haven’t gone to in depth but i instantly reconised my favs like Irjescu just by the stats alone. e.g
    Cinalton 2012
    http://pesdb.net/pes2012/player.php?id=54874&filter_Name=cinalton&sort=Overall_rating&order=d
Gertoni LWF south american ML defualt has identical stats but its 2 cm’s shorter and 2 kilos heavyer.
I still haven’t got my head round these crazy koniamo brazilian names i’m just calling then by their old names in my head.
I tested this out with Irjescu to and he has an identical twin stats wise in both sets of 2013 ML defualts. Unfortunat;ly he’s usless this year…

  31. Lloyd—sounds like you will be having a last fling with your old ML team. Enjoy the torrid time…

  32. Max—so they’re not really Irjescu & co., then? The way you said it at first made it sound as if they were the exact same players with different names (i.e., just Edit the name, and there you have them, Irjescu & co.).

In any case as you’ve found they don’t play the same in PES2013. A shame, as I thought there was more to come from the PES2012 defaults.

  33. I wouldnt expect that many of those ‘issues’ would be patched by 1.03 either, I merely summarised the overall feedback of what people wanted patching most, doesn’t mean Konami will do it, especially if it was intentionally programmed that way in the first place and is seen as a feature rather than an issue by Konami.

I think we may get a surprise though in the form of the addition of league Mode. depends on the parch size.
They did it in 2012 by adding in the updated Copa Libertadores mode so its doable.
All the furor that surrounds the removal of league mode amuses me though, I’ve never once played that mode in any PES.

  34. Paul—before there was PES, before there was Master League, there was ISS and League Mode. Used to be all I ever played on ISS. I would love to see its return in the patch, if only to allow non-ML players to experience the game. I might have a dabble myself too at some point.

  35. I just dont see the point really.
If im going to invest time in playing a 40 match season or whatever then I want to do so properly, with transfers, etc. League mode would just be stale and boring for me.
That’s a completely selfish point of view of course, and totally appreciate that league mode is essential for a lot of people as a ‘pick up and play’ mode and a quick fix.
If I had to choose though, id much rather see improved form arrows and referee’s than league mode.

  36. Paul—League Mode does have its own internal dynamic and moreishness. Think ML stripped down to literally just the matches, and for one season only. You can play a complete one in a few days if you wish. So I know the attraction, but prefer ML myself for long-term interest.

Not that any of this means League Mode is going to return, though.

  37. See what you just described above would bore me and hold absolutely no interest for me, unless if you won the league it had a glorious trophy celebration and cinematic presentation like you used to get for winning things in PES of old, without that, I just dont see the point.

  38. Paul – I played quite a lot of league mode in the PSP version that didn’t have ML, and got quite addicted to the one-off challenge nature. E.g. avoid getting relegated with Sunderland, win an international league with England etc. It’s pretty compelling in terms of pushing you to use your full knowledge of tactics, formations etc to get the most out of a fixed squad, rather than waiting for transfers

However, I’d agree with you in the sense that I’ve never played it in preference to ML since

  39. Max – so who is the PES2013 twin of Irjescu? I managed to score a ‘proper’ Irjescu goal with the man himself last night, a 35 yard swerving rocket to win 2-1 v the 4th placed team in injury time which essentially wrapped up promotion. Obviously you and not-greg scored many of these, but this was my first real Irjescu long-ranger despite months of trying!!

  40. abbeyhill—-despite months of trying with numerous early versions of Irjescu, you mean. You’ve never played with a more mature Irjescu, the player he can become after three-four seasons or so, but it sounds as if you’re finally on the verge of getting one. Enjoy him!

  41. Hmmm. I wonder who would win in a fight between Irjescu (PES 2012 edition) and Coynborough.

  42. well that’s the funny thing, not-greg, even in my 5 season ML I never saw any OVR growth in Irjescu despite a fair bit of game time. In contrast, other people on here (was it John?) got him into the 90s. Likewise in my current 2 season deep career he’s still stuck on about 60. Although at least his shooting suddenly looks better; he’d just cracked a half volley off the bar a few minutes before the thunderbolt winner. I’ll certainly keep hold of him for my long awaited D1 debut, although Duffy and Camacho might not be so lucky

  43. Id go for Coynborough, his tenacity is sky high, he wouldn’t stop punching and kicking until he maimed Irjescu, or keeled over from exhaustion.
And if some of the tackles I’ve made with him are anything to go by, he’s also a 10th Dan Black Belt in Mixed martial arts!!!

  44. John & Paul—I’d go for Coynborough too, although Irjescu’s lethal left peg would do some damage if Coynborough was put on the floor.

  45. abbeyhill—as you know all too well by now, you roll a new one every time you start ML. No two are the same.

Camacho and Duffy were weak for me too. PES2012 is slipping away from memory with every new day that passes.

  46. NG- yes its a big shame i was so looking forward to playing with Irjescu again that when i saw he wasn’t in the gamne i edited him in only to find was he was in the game under a different name. Luckily Minda has been so great and i signed a player called Villacaraz early on that is even better then Irjescu!

abbeyhill- his name is Myrheim but he plays nothing like Irescu of 2012 and although he starts off with shot power 82 it doesn’t zip off his boot like does for Irjescu, I recomend Villacaraz as an early DFM with shot power 88. I can’t remember the name of the south american twin but hes there with shot power 82 body ballence 81 and dribble acc 75. heres a goal i scored with Myrheim in season one, the only goal he scored for me i think…

  47. If any1 hadden’t already guessed Coynborough is the re-encarnation of Stein “mini Roy Kean” my fav defualt in 2011. Exactly the same stats but Coyny is a bit taller.

  48. Max—call me Mr Picky, but if they’re called different and they look different and they play different, they’re different!

  49. Was I the only one who read boobs boobs boobs etc?

  50. Mr picky- I’d have to agree with you they are different even though they have the exact same stats. Why go to all the bother of creating new defaults names and pysicall apearences only copy and paste their abilities? It’s just typical konami logic…
