  1. LOL. I take it a) you’re also getting alot of boots and b) you didnt have much to say today.

  2. Can anyone lend me some boots? 🙂

  3. LOLZ! Post of the year!

  4. I’m a bit disappointed about the lack of boots in today’s post.

  5. exactly – not-greg’s reluctance to comment on this topical issue is disappointing. He’s in cohorts with Conami

  6. Paul—there was as much to talk about as ever. I’ve passed through the transfer window and signed a few new players (one pictured in post). I’ll get to them on Wednesday now.

    But… booooots!

  7. Lloyd—yep, you can have some of mine. I’ve got plenty.

  8. Max—you should have seen the longer version.

  9. John—I edited this post down from a 900-worder. It was tough, not knowing what to leave out, but I got there in the end. I think the shorter, 550-word structure gives more focus to the dynamic of the, uh, boots question.

  10. abbeyhill—it’s the sheer deluge of boots post-patch that’s starting to worry me. Will it never end?!

  11. They’ve even started to award me some of the crappy WE/PES boots now! We definitely need a patch for this, I’m outraged.

  12. Think i now have at least 2 pairs of every boot except 1.

  13. It does seem odd to have more boots available then you have players’ feet but it doesn’t really bother me to be honest. Again it’s a case of clicking through the crap between games to get to the gameplay.

I wonder what feedback Komami have about the whole boots feature. Not so much the stat-boosting issue (yes, bootgate) but just the ability to swap your players’ little shoes. I wonder if they initially got the idea from the vocal few on the forums who would often kick-off (sorry) about boot authenticity. Never understood why.

  14. Yet another example of shameless merchandising on PES Chronicles. Please point out there are other chemists on the high street.

  15. Squad down to 18 players. Signed Birsa ss 82ovr and Garics rb 81ovr. About 8 teams tried to sign my star player Cuadrado 82ovr and can play anywhere, he’s not going for any price.

  16. You wont have a choice Lloyd, if he wants to go you’ll either have to sell him or he’ll just be unhappy and out of form!

  17. Lloyd – how are you managing to persuade these 80+ players to sign, as a lowly D2 club?

Paul – like me, Lloyd is still playing the superior PES2012, where you can ignore transfer requests and don’t receive boots

  18. Cook—if the boots tail off soon, we’ll know that the patch just changed the criteria of their award for a whole career, and this is our extended saves ‘catching up’ by retrospectively awarding lots of boots. If it never ends… if every victory earns yet more boots… this could only be the start of our Tribbles.

  19. Mike—I’ve stopped even looking at the boots, frankly. Whenever I get a new player I pick the first likely-looking pair and slap them on him, and that’s that. There’s no sense of strategy when there are so many boots.

  20. John—somebody said somewhere that the Call of Duty ‘perks’ system may have been the boots & items system’s main inspiration.

  21. Uncle Turf—pedant’s corner here: only the first word of each sentence evokes the well-known High St chemist. Every other occurrence of the word ‘boots’ is with a lower-case ‘b’, thus signifying a generic usage, not a trade-name one. The ladies, they love me.

Admittedly, if I were to make a spoken word version of this post, possibly as a discoverable Easter Egg within the post, the upper/lower case distinction wouldn’t survive, and Lloyds could sue.

  22. Abbeyhill – have you played any PES13 yet? or still on PES12?

  23. NG – first word of every sentence is enough. I’m also a bit suspicious of the poster named ‘Lloyd’ as well.

By way of illustrating my ‘easiness’ point; I have just beaten Cardiff (D2 made PL team) 4-0 away. I made 3 youth team subs at half time. I had 27 shots (22 on target), they had 0. Not one shot at goal the whole match. They won 1 tackle. They had no corners. I conceded 1 free kick for an offside. Minandinho scored 3. It’s just far too easy against most of the teams, then suddenly rock hard when either the next game goes script, or the AI results seek to keep you in check. I honestly don’t think going to zero bar would change their score – I have a defence of 100, 101, 102, 107 and a forward pairing of 106 and 100. These are 2012 season 10+ numbers.

  24. Abbeyhill- Bisra and Garics were both from others and Cuadrado has developed from 74ovr.
Me, suspicious, with my reputation. How very dare you.:-)

  25. Paul – not yet; I’ve indicated to my wife that PES13 would be the perfect Xmas present! Pretty reluctant to switch from PES12 until I reach some sort of positive conclusion to my ML sagas – at least this suddenly seems more likely than one week ago…

  26. I was looking forward to it aswell :L

  27. Abbey hill
I look forlornly at the 2013 box and dream of the time when the living room was on the same floor as the kitchen so I could cook and play..damn you town house
Scored 1 in 3 games on PES 5 las t night
Its well fast compared to this gen
Dont know how long the Mrs will allow the ps2 to kept inthe kitchen..watch this space…

  28. Abbeyhill – deffo makes sense to come to some kind of closure with PES12 first and why move on if you’re enjoying it.
BUT, you’ll definitely see when you do play it, that PES12’s game play at least is in no way superior to PES13, PES13 is a much much better, tighter, fluid experience. Its just the modes themselves that lack any guts!

  29. werd – I’ve got a nice setup of PES12 on a 3D TV, but it is dependent on the kids and then the wife going off to bed before I can begin. Bloody X-Factor finals have hit my ML time

  30. Paul – fluid, good! There’s certainly nothing fluid about it at the moment when I’m trying to pass the ball about at the back between Cotsload, Schmidt and Palmeiri to hang onto a slender lead. Pinball passing (which I believe the forums view as a Very Bad Thing) it ain’t!

  31. I think most on here will agree that you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how nicely PES13 plays in contrast to PES12, of course there’s always those first few seasons with the defaults that can make the game feel laborious, and you’ll be stuck with them for even longer this time round 😉

  32. abbeyhill—I’ve got to say, after almost 6 full seasons of ML on PES2013, PES2013 is a better game of football than PES2012. PES2013 has a proper shooting mechanic, for one thing—not a minor matter at all. Whether this edition turns out to be a better overall ML experience… Still too early to say.

As for the Defaults in PES2013, they’re generally so good that you won’t mind being stuck with them for longer. I stand by my feeling that this season’s crop of Defaults and Youths are a sentimental going-away present from Konami, as a farewell to a whole era of Master League. Assuming PES2014 is a definitive break with all aspects of the game since 2001, of course.

  33. Abbey Hill – the xy chromosome factor finished!!…rejoice to the sounds of men all over the UK getting their tv’s back and not having to drink to drown out the hooting of eeediots or in my case read and make sarky comments every 10mins….apologies for rant..wish rage against the machine went to no.1 again 🙂

  34. Well I have hit top spot in the PL now and don’t intend to give it up. 13 games into season 7, and aside from my immediate challengers the AI low scoring is as bad as ever; Reading GF8 GA7. I am going to tempt that can of worms by mentioning Candyman three times and saying with only 1 player above 27, many millions in the bank and an awesome first XI the only thing I see stopping a dynasty is me selling a key player or them getting so miffed they refuse a contract. Apparently it happens? I will be devastated if it’s Minandinho.

  35. Cclarock – That made my day. Speaking of boots, I got Nike mercurials after my number 9 Wroughlen smashed me through to the second round of the cup with an extra time double after being brought on in the 95th minute.

  36. do we know if everyone is getting the same boots and if so if the stats associated with them are identical? Early doors I got mainly WEPES shoes and the odd Mizuno/Umbro. I am assuming there isn’t a random generator as I seem to get either high power/acc low speed, vice versa or a 3/2/2/1/2 effort. I have yet to see “5 star boots” which boost your speed, power and accuracy by significant amounts. Am I taking boots too seriously…?

  37. This post actually terrifies me. Especially when I clicked on the blue bit and it started speaking at me. I’m not joking, nothing has scared me in a long time as much as the above.

  38. werd llitrah—I don’t understand why you don’t have your own TVs anyway?! Even a little portable SDTV thing would do the job.

  39. ck—ahhh, that takes me back to 2004.

  40. Uncle Turf

Well I have hit top spot in the PL now and don’t intend to give it up.

Yet more ‘retiring cop on the last day of active duty’ stuff there, but I suspect you wouldn’t be saying it if it wasn’t pretty much as you say. I’ve noticed myself easing into Superstar a lot easier than I thought as well, but I’m still in the phase of fighting for nearly everything.

I’m not paying enough attention to the boots to answer your question.

  41. Boots.

    Boots?

    Yeah, boots.

I feel your pain. My latest ML career in South America (virtually that is, I’m still in Dublin), seems to be giving me new boots after every game. I used them a lot in the first campaign but now I just ignore them.

I will disagree on the above post about the X Factor ending. That’s a bad thing for me. It used to mean 2 hours of Pro Evo every time it was on. What with the jungle thing ending as well, I’m in a bad place,

    Not-Greg – how’s the book coming along?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9D_cKZ_dhdo&feature=youtube_gdata_player

  42. Ng-its not a tv thing its a time thing…theres room for a den type thing once the house is sorted though

  43. Liam—there’ll be a book update during Christmas week. More extracts. I shall say no more…

  44. Nice one, looking forward to it. I hope there’s a section on Boots.

  45. Turf – is the biggest threat to your Dynasty the risk of you getting bored of winning all the time?

  46. I’ve had Nike Mercurials, Mizuno’s, Adidas predators, Umbro’s, Puma’s all sorts of boots in the 12 games I’ve played this season, I must have gone full cycle as I’ve started to be awarded the generic PES branded boots now too. I’ve gone through my item inventory and deleted about 20 pairs of surplus boots, every single player in my 30 man squad is now equipped with one type of boot or another!

Squeaked through by a point to the last 32 of the Europa league last night and also through to the FA Cup quarter final, sat 6th in the Premier League, season is going well, putting in superb performances against the ‘big teams’ even when I lose its very marginally.

Minandinho & Bancé are forming a formidable partnership, 21 goals between them so far this season and its only just December.

  47. NG/abbeyhill – yes, I’m definitely indulging in a little of the Hollywood build ups but yes, I am a little bored – my 100+ team has been pretty much fixed for a few seasons now, I have the next level of high 80s subs (Scholes, Klose, etc) and the ones to bring on for experience when I’m well ahead (Villa, Mexes, etc). None of the players likely to join me are of interest – a couple in the 90s but both hit 30y.o, rest are 80s and below, 20 points away from my team. Hopefully Jan youth will have 1 or 2 of interest but they’d have to be amazing to edge out Totti and company. I think maybe we’ve been given great youngsters far too early and there are fewer hidden gems – my best team last year was (strikers aside) nearly all unknowns – Kmou, heycory, etc. I find Minandinho’s shooting so powerful and so accurate as to make me confident of scoring every game. The sprint from left to right then firing back across goal to the left corner is my ‘Ribeiro corner’ this year, so much so I’m starting to experiment with Max-like efforts once I’m 2-0 up. He currently has 37 goals in mid Dec. I know I could go back to zero bar but that wasn’t so much a challenge as a screwing over.

It sounds quite big-headed all of this but I do feel this is not as tough as 2012 once you have a very good team (early doors it was insanely hard for me), and I got some early development boosts with my season 1 flukey promotion and Euro League win (as well as the impact boots/items have – a +5 shot accuracy is surely excessive). I haven’t suffered any of the want-away transfers like most and I might crash back to earth in the CL knockouts but at the moment I feel like a treble will only fail if I get a ridiculous script rather than a great, tough match.

  48. Oh and the boots are now replicating – exact same pair just different colours – ok Konami, joke’s over now.

  49. Uncle Turf – This is a scenario I was a little worried about. Now I see it’s playing out with you. I still find myself having to stick to a house rule so I’m sometimes forced to sell players when I get offers for them. But, like you say, I struggle to find players worth splashing cash on.

Despite my house rule, it looks like I’m going to hang on to my top scorer – the rocket booted Rodelin. I had to transfer list him when an initial offer broke down but he’s not been “determined to leave” just “happy either way” about all subsequent offers.

I trimmed my squad down from 25 to 23 due to no Europe in my season 6 (another house rule) only for the new season to role around with my secretary telling me we are in the Europa! I can only assume finishing runners-up in the FA Cup to Man Utd earned me a place after all. A nice surprise.
