Unlimited Kompany

I am sticking to my stated aim of ‘completing’ this Master League with Youths, Regens. Defaults, and Journeymen. I haven’t brought in a £100m+ player yet, and I don’t believe I ever will.

Season 8 is underway. To mark the occasion I dipped into the impressive category of ‘young big-name Regens who have been in my Youths for several seasons, but not quite looked good enough until now, and whom I want to snap up before they enter the Free Agent pool’. In every recent edition of PES, that’s a shockingly long list of players.

Step forward the ultimate PES defender, a currently 20-year-old V KOMPANY.

Hands up who else had him when nobody knew who he was in PES5. Almost every single person reading this can put down their hands now. People who did not play PES5, and/or did not have Kompany in their PES5 team, know exactly what they need to do if they ever get their hands on a working time machine.

After winning the Europa League at the end of last season, I played the Supercup match vs PSG. And got thumped 3-1. It was a proper hammering. PSG were the most powerful side I have yet faced in PES2020. My goal was only a 90th minute consolation.

I got to the start of the season and immediately checked to see who was in my Champions League group. PSG are there. Along with AC Milan and one other whose name I forget right now. I never claimed to be the most detail-focused PES blogger.

In the league I’ve played 4, won 2, drew 1, and lost 1. Season 8 might well be my final season on the PS4, so I’ve got a special interest in doing well in the league.

Away to Tottenham I was 1-0 up for most of the match and it looked like all 3 points were mine heading into injury time.

Then Tottenham scored a 95th-minute equaliser that almost broken my heart and mind at the same time.

If it wasn’t for that  goal, Tottenham wouldn’t be top and I’d be 2nd in this table:I have no goals worth showing in this post once more.

Unless something remarkable happens in the PC modding world, PES2020 will be remembered as the edition with arguably the least satisfying goals in PES history.

99% of all PES2020 goals are of the ‘work the ball into the box and sidefoot or scramble it home’ variety. Which can be satisfying in terms of context, but as self-contained visual spectacles the goals are ordinary in the extreme.

Making long-range efforts such a low-% chance of success that they’re really not worth the attempt, is one of several terrible decisions that PES Productions have made to achieve their multiplayer balancing act. With every year that goes by, we are more and more marginalised as single-players.

MY CHRISTMAS HUMBUG SCHEDULE

The local world is about to have its mid-winter festival. People string up bright lights, decorate trees, exchange gifts, and eat and drink and get merry. The days start getting longer. HUMBUG.

I will be here on Tuesday – Christmas Eve – with a regular post.

But then I’ll skip the following two posts and not be back until Friday January 3rd 2020.

  1. I haven’t signed a £100m player either, and never ever do in ML, my closest was
£76m for Martin Odegaard which was offset by £32m in cash and Gerson in a player plus cash deal.

‘Names’ I’ve signed from my youth team … Ashley Cole, David Silva, Ricardo Quaresma, Jamie Vardy and also had the opportunity to sign several other big names via the scout list, including a certain L Messi, but passed up the opportunity.

If I wanted to fill my team with massive names, I’d go play MyClub, ML for me is all about taking lesser known players and forging them into legends.
My most memorable ML’s over the years have involved players such as Villalba, Marcos Reuben, Upemecano, Embolo, Maolida …. I can still remember passages of play, tackles and goals they have scored years later, that’s the appeal of MyClub.

This coming season, season 9, will be my final season on PS4 PES20, having already won the Europa League, FA Cup, Premier League and European Super Cup, all that’s left to win is the Champions League, or the treble, neither of which will happen on SS level.

  2. I can’t sign big name players – no matter what I offer they won’t come to Charlton. I have had chiellini out of the youths and salah/robben on loan but other than that I simply can’t spend the huge budget I have.

I now feel I was indeed witnessing a season long ‘you shall get promoted cinderella’ where 99% of matches were a stroll and a similar very easy start to life in the premier league. I now can’t win a game. Superstar crush space, foul and defy physics is back – I’m talking 15+ shots per match, zero fouls and it ends 0-0. Dull as old dog shit.

If I was offered the chance to move clubs and a big enough name came along I’d jump at it simply to add variety. I refuse to do the resignation thing though and England has no attraction.

  3. Paul/Uncle Turf – I haven’t even tried to sign any big name players since the Mezut Ozil fiasco of Season 2 (when I was a lower-mid-table team in D2 and tried to spend all my bidget on Ozil, to see if I could have got him, and I could have if I wanted to). Severely unimpressed with the Master League world as ever. It hasn’t been what we want it be since probably PES2011. Maybe PES2012. Last year when I struggled with the finances was just me, I finally realised.

All the FM2019 I’ve been playing recently (closing in on a playoff spot with BK Avarta in Denmark’s 3rd tier) has kind of immunised me to the bullshit that is the league setup in PES. Lots of realism over there is making me look more kindly on disappointing fantasy over here.

Paul – I’m just checking over my Sider setup and as I expected, it crashed the game when I first started up as it’s been a few weeks since I updated it. I have now updated it and got it working, and the game itself is updated to the latest official Steam version you’ll be playing when you come down the stairs on Christmas morning. So you’ll have an ‘out of the box’ configuration to start off with at least (unless Konami sneak in an update between now and Xmas Day).

All the major mods are now working. 3 modules no longer work with this version and need to be updated and I’m updating two of them right now. There is 1 module that I am not going to update and will send you my Sider folder without it, and that’s my Gameplay mod. You’re better off starting with vanilla gameplay and building your own custom gameplay package from there. There are currently dozens to choose from.

My Sider folder is a half-built house that you may well end up demolishing and starting afresh with, but it will give you a good working overview of how everything fits together, and you can cannibalise its parts for your own pristine OCD-friendly version in due course of course 🙂

I hope you’re ready for the learning curve. It’s mainly Googling and puzzling things out, which I enjoy doing when I’m doing it, but if you’re the sort that’s enraged by such things (as many people are), start your yoga meditation practice now, because that’s life in the PC modding lane.

I recorded a vid of me testing all the mods and will post it here when it’s finished processing. It includes me discovered two broken camera mods that I am currently fixing.

  4. Turf – Club Ranking plays a huge part, I am currently ranked 35th, and have just won the Premier league so that should go up even more, star players reject you if you are not considered a big club.

NG – Totally appreciate the time you’re taking to provide this, and it sounds perfect, something to get me going and build upon, I’d prefer the vanilla game play anyway as when I do start trying game play mods, I will have something (vanilla) to benchmark it against.

I also spent a good couple of hours yesterday watching some FIFA modding videos, and as a result am now clued up on how to design and implement custom kits in FIFA, along with the 3d embroidery bump maps it uses.
i’ve gotten hold of a FIFA 20 kit template and have built my own Photoshop PSD layers template over it much like I use for PES kits, so can use it to design new kits and then import into Frosty Editor.

I have the 2nd and 3rd of Jan off work too so am not back after xmas even until the 6th, so gives me some good time to tinker with everything PC related, and fit the extra RAM I’ve just ordered.

  5. Uncle Turf – and I forgot to say that I must have overwritten a top team when I made my CCFC this year, and they would have preserved whatever prestige factor they came with when I ported them into D2. Albeit they were ‘only’ a top team in Asia, can’t remember who. Gareth Bale was prepared to go there so it’s not a total stretch, but it’s still not quite FM levels of realism….

Paul – this is currently on 360p only, maybe wait an hour until 1440p is ready – a ten-minute viewing of all the major mods working OK:

Note the part where I discover the Broadcast camera mod is only half-working, and the Vertical camera mod not working at all. Just fixing them now. I’ll have the whole thing zipped and uploaded over the weekend, probably by this time tomorrow.

PES modding is fiddly as the proverbial fuck. FIFA modding looks so much cleaner as it’s all via a single application! Wish I knew what the hell I was doing in that Frosty editor though. It awaits you, I think.

  6. NG – Thanks again!! will keep refreshing until the video plays at proper quality.

Frosty looks quite simple, i like the tree/branch folder layout, and unless you want to make changes to config and ini files etc, the process for accessing kits and logos etc is all quite straightforward

  7. Paul – kits in FIFA are straightforward indeed, and Frosty even has its own little previewer window within the app. I’d love a similar all in one app for PES modding. If anything the openness of PES modding harms it there, as it’s meant there are numerous angles of attack.

I’ve just discovered that the Broadcast camera being in the state of only half-working (as seen in the vid) is the current actual state of the mod following last week’s Konami update. The mod curator has not so far updated it (it happens sometimes in PES modding). I can send you my Sider folder as-is and when the modder updates his file you can very easily update the Broadcast mod yourself (it’s just dropping two files into a particular folder within Sider). But I’d like to send you a Sider folder that works out of the box…

A solution is posted here but I cannot for the life of me find this ‘269th line’ in the .lua file in question where I need to post the amended code. I’ve opene the file within an editor that has line numbering – the apparent line 269 is nothing to do with this. And Ctrl-F doesn’t come up with anything either… Any modders reading this with a clue?

You’ve got all this to look forward to, Paul… (Although I suspect FIFA will be getting most of your attention.)

  8. NG – I’ll take whatever you can give, by the time i get round to fiddling with it just after xmas, there may be a fix for it already out anyway!

the modded broadcast cam is one of the plus points im looking forward to trying.

  9. Paul – in that case I will definitely get the Broadcast cam fixed before pinging the folder your way. It’ll be over the weekend for sure. You’re not opening your prezzies before the big day are you? Chances are the mod maker will update it himself.

Did you see the bit of the vid above with the zoomed-out fan camera?!

  10. I’ve now had nearly a dozen shitfestty awful games in the pl on superstar and I retract every ill judged Smaug comment about it breaking. Basically, without any change to my team it’s decided to stop the players doing everything they were previously. Most notably the runs off the ball which created that fraction of space and the more relaxed defending around the box. Is this meant to be them ‘learning my system’ or just shite programming? I’ll soon find out as I got my wished for offer – and a nice ‘reality meets fiction’ moment when arsenal came calling. One place above me, only 85m and 3m wages with an ageing team shy of strikers. Hopefully it’s a good challenge, with some sort of variety to what I’ve seen for season after season.

  11. Uncle Turf – I couldn’t play PES all year round and do this blog for as long as I have if I wasn’t immune to an extent from the syndrome that regularly overtakes you and nearly every commenter that posts here. I think only Lloyd never pops up with grumbles about how the game is going. I grumble a lot, but I have this need to keep going and I always seem to find my level with a PES. There have been notable exceptions – PES2011 still hurts (the one that got away).

But overall I still want to play PES2020. Knowing that I’m moving to another platform where I can (and will) mod the shit out of it probably doesn’t flatter the game though.

  12. And for any who are interested in the PC modding side of things, the Broadcast camera is fixed – here I am messing about with it, and about 2/3rds of the way through I use it to create a PS2-style Wide camera. Watch the amusing bug that strikes around the 2:15 mark with a teleporting player (side-effect of a gameplay mod (dt18, not Sider) that I still had installed, not the camera mod):

  13. Wtf? What the absolute…. arsenal….youth team….I have inherited a very old team – lots of 33-38 yos. No problem thinks I, I’ll dip into the youth team. It’s full of 50overall, mainly Chinese players?! There isn’t a single real player, and none better than the master league default average. This has to be a konami data balls up or something unplanned that happens when you move clubs as every other club is getting their former stars as regens. This is now a huge job.

  14. Things settled down after the house move and have had some game time of late. Currently playing Heavy Rain which was on offer on the store for a fiver. I had my eye on it after enjoying Detroit Become Human so much. After then I am likely to get Death Stranding with some Christmas money or maybe Civilisation 6 which seems to have got lots of positive reviews on the console.

Looking forward to Scrooge tonight as it looks good and is written by the bloke who did Peaky Blinders, which I have been binge watching over the last couple of weeks.

  15. Uncle Turf – to have a great PES experience there, why not make do with what you’ve been served up? Pretend you’ve got a transfer ban and squeeze all the performance you can out of that ragtag bunch. PES is best when played with lesser players and always has been. Start the revolving door turning and you know for certain where it ends in a few seasons’ time.

Darryl – I watched the first season of Peaky Blinders with great enjoyment. Sam Neill! And I’m sure they’ll have to mention Coventry at some point. But the last episode of Season 1 with the big faceoff in the street – it was so bad – slightly soured me on the show and I’m taking my sweet time getting around to Season 2. I will, though.

If you’ve never played a Civilization game before, 6 is a good place to start and you might get addicted. But if you have played a Civilization game before… It’s something of a ‘PES2010’, is what I’m saying. Good, but not top-tier good IMO.

Death Stranding, now… More of an experience than a game. I’ve read difficult Russian novels that were more transparent than this game. If you haven’t got time to devote to it, maybe best wait until you do.

  16. NG – nice idea, but not in this pes, not in superstar. The team is very arsenal, the youth team is someone else’s – none of their former players are in it as regens, there’s no one above 59, there’s no one real in it. It’s very wrong, in a konami fuck up way.

    What I was given was;

3 gk of 81-4 ability, all on about 4m. Why 3?! That’s a huge drain on budget.
8 cbs – the best of which is 28yo and 74 ovr (they were setup as a 3-5-2 which I’ve kept)
A midfield of oaps – Ramsey, xhaka, mkhitarayan, gotze – they are all about to retire and have pace in the 50s, stamina that barely lasts a half.
Lacazette up front – not regen, but the 7 season hence version, another guy aged 35 and someone else aged 38!
Only players worth keeping/can be kept due to impending retirement) are sessegnon, bellerin and debuchy regen. I’d love to keep Ramsey and a few others but their race is run.

It’s a huge rebuild job. And it’s not helped by arsenal having the same sort of chance of signing players as Charlton. They’ve obviously spent years n the wilderness as I’m being rejected by everyone who isn’t a free agent. Luckily one of those – quite bafflingly – was regen Cristiano ronaldo! Wtf is going on? Why was he not in a youth team? Whether I’ll get to play much with him is the question as I haven’t won a game yet and I suspect the sack will be much quicker coming.

  17. NG – I have played the Civilisation games in the past as I was more of a PC player during the PS2 era. I think I will have plenty of time in January and Death Stranding does intrigue me.

  18. Darryl – Good to see you mate, how you finding Heavy Rain?
Was one of my all time favourite PS3 games, and bought it again on the PS4 remastered, some great story telling, David Cage and Quantic have that eery cinematic suspense presentation down to a tee, I still have Detroit on the go, its a slow burner that I play in the cinema room whenever I get time.

Have possibly played my last ever match of PES20, on PS4 at least.
Season 8 finished with me winning the premier league, so took part in the pre-season International Champions Cup, which was a total Superstar shitfest of cheatery, then that was followed by a defeat to Man City in the Community shield in yet another BS cheat match, first game of season 9 was a 2-0 win against Wolves, followed by a 2-1 loss at Southampton in yet another absolute waste of time match.

In all these BS matches the SS handicapping was in ultra Max Mode, my players not responding, taking forever to get off passes or wind up shots, my players just stopping running, leaving COM players free on goal, every single deflection or loose ball falling into the path of an unmarked COM player, countless fouls that went unpunished, but a foul as soon as |I try to tackle an AI player, my players with superb pass, dribbling, speed, acceleration, control stats caught up with, out-muscled by, tackled by, any AI player on the pitch, repeatedly, commentary that bares no resemblance to whats going on in game, its just too much.

Not enjoyable, a frustrating pointless mess that just makes me angry.
Have saved my ML 2 weeks into season 9 and there it shall stay.

Will fit in a few friendlies on FIFA 20 tonight, ease off that PES muscle memory, ready for hopefully a modded up CM on FIFA 20 PC after xmas.

  19. Darryl – then you are probably a Civ 3 man? Or Civ 4. Both of which were excellent games. The strange thing with ~Civ is that (for me anyway) there is no PES5-equivalent instalment, i.e. none that in clearly and unmistakeably the best of the lot. I’d say any of Civs2-5 could easily be my Desert Island Civ game. I’ve only played Civ 6 for about 10 hours all told, which is nothing in Civ terms, so I can’t really judge.

Uncle Turf – there’s nothing inevitable about having to rebuild, having to get GenericAttackingMidfielder4352 playing alongside GenericAttackingMidfielder4353 and so on – the nuPES route. How much more interesting and testing and Purity-focused, to make do with what the game has given you…

Paul – if you manage to pull out a fouls-based football game from the innards of the Frosty Editor on PC FIFA, I will take my hat off to you sir.

  20. NG – Not holding out much hope on the FIFA fouls front, from what i heard that’s a ‘protected asset’ within the code and as such isn’t moddable, but we shall see, plenty of other bits to tinker with.

  21. NG – both and equally as good in my opinion. I played Civ 4 to death, so that would have to be my favourite for this reason alone.

When I say I was a PC gamer then, there was only a handful of games I would play and that was Championship Manager, Civilisation and the odd turn based military game like Iron Cross etc. However, I would play these all year round. Miss those days.

Paul – Yes loving it so far and very compelling story telling again, just like Detroit Become Human, which I have done a few different playthroughs with different endings. My kind of games now.

  22. NG – problem is I’d not have enough players, half the team is retiring. And the youth team is so clearly broken that it would be ridiculous. As it is the challenge is very real – I’ve managed to sign regen ronaldo but he has about 35 mins of stamina, lobato on a swap deal and he’s still the same old looks good stat wise but doesn’t do it for me, koscielny regen and some South American midfielder. I have to play Ramsey et al when they can’t last a half!

Speaking of which does anyone notice stamina dropping much faster for certain games? In bigger cup ties my players seem wrecked very quickly, despite no changes to my usual play. I also think they’ve altered AI free kicks – 4 in a row now around the box have not been on target.

I’ve also dipped into the ps store for some titles in their sale – some great bargains to be had.

  23. Seasons greetings.

First season in Premier League drawing to a close abd just lost FA Cup Final to Man United. Last game of season against wolves, a win keeps me 7th and a back door route to the Europa League. Still on professional, will go up when I win something.

  24. Uncle Turf – as a huge fan of golf games (Tiger Woods 2003 on PS2 was an obsession, what a game that was) I had to spend 12 quid on The Golf Club 2019. I went for PS4 instead of PC as I read on Steam (which cut its prices to match the PSN Sale) that the PC version is a poor port of what was intended to be a console game. So… I get through the tutorial on PS4, play my first proper hole, and as I drop the first putt – sudden crash to the PS4 menu. First time that’s ever happened to me on PS4. Not impressed. But what I sampled of the game was fantastic.

In PES2020 I’m starting to notice ‘Jamesian’ disablings of my controller input at crucial moments, which is profoundly disturbing to me. Cost me a goal and a precious win this morning.

Lloyd – seriously considering Top Player/PA0 to ‘save’ PES2020 from itself. Superstar strangles the gameplay, while being great at time. The 1 excellent match per session isn’t enough.

Darryl – all those old strategy games are still there, most of them free now, and would run on any hardware I think.

I’d have to say Civ 2 was my most compelling Civ – I once stayed up all night playing it until lunchtime the following day – but if I had to pick one to take with me into a Doomsday Vault, I’d go for 4 too, as it seemed to have a bit of everything good from the others in it.

  25. NG – if it’s golf you’re after you absolutely have to get tiger woods for the Wii…. I bought Rory mcilroy (ie tiger woods) a year or so ago but because it’s a download I keep forgetting I’ve got it. I should make a box so I remember.

Transfer window was awful, constant rejections and zero offers till the last ten hours, at which point I was flooded with bids for my ageing expensive squad. Could only ship out four and got to bring one in. I’ve ended up altering the formation to fit what I’ve got. Team spirit is in the 60s. I’m seriously wondering if I’ll survive. It’s the classic case of a successful manager at asmall club punching above his weight and getting a big job with the media now queuing up to question whether he’s up to it. Am I allardyce?

  26. Just dropping in to wish you and all your families a wonderful xmas, enjoy the time off, the mince pies and booze and a safe and happy holidays!

See you all in the new year!

  27. Paul – thanks, and the same to you and all. Today’s post at 12 is going to be a very light one! Little more than a league table and two goals and some moaning about goal-scoring. Same as it ever was then.

Uncle Turf – The Wii worked as advertised maybe 20% of the time. The rest of the time, a mighty thwack would result in my on-screen golfer perhaps twitching a bit. I don’t want to discuss all the advice I took online and in real-life from other Wii owners about the positioning of the sensor bar and calibration of the controllers etc. The upshot of it all was that the TV advert picture of faultless golfing was a fantasy. About a year after I got rid of it I heard Nintendo upgraded the firmware and improved things, but that bird had flown. I really don’t want to talk about it now. Fuck the Wii. The Wii can just go and swivel on its own useless nunchuk thing. Worst console ever. I’d take a ZX80 over the Wii anyday. Hell, a Binatone Pong box. A bucket and spade. A ball and a stick. The Wii is Poo. That is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know. #fuckthewii No power on earth or anywhere else is ever going to change my mind about the Wii. And my settled dislike of it wasn’t just because it spectacularly failed to allow me to play Tiger Woods in the way all the TV adverts promised it would. I also didn’t like the unique Wii take on PES. But the Tiger Woods fiasco was unforgivable. I will never forgive it or go to stay with my auntie and my uncle in Bel Air. I’d do a huge expansive swing, only to see my on-screen golfer give a sort of twitch, and send the golf ball trickling a few inches. I read all the calibration and fine-tuning articles available on the web and the fact that there were LOTS of them spoke volumes as to the actual nature of this ‘motion gaming’ thing. the Wii worked as advertised maybe 20% of the time. 28. Look what you’ve done Turf!!!!

PES on the Wii with the classic controller was actually a great game, like a HD PES 5!

  29. Nothing on the Wii was good.
