Over the past week I’ve had a few short breaks from playing PES2008, and it’s made a huge difference. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve probably overplayed the game on the PSP in particular this year. PES gameplay is robust and very more-ish, as its fans well know, but not even PES could withstand the kind of hours I was putting in on it. I was starting to get too picky with the game—at times I saw its faults all too large, and its greatness hardly at all.

Throughout the years I’ve always noticed and been annoyed by scripting/God Mode/auto-balancing/whatever you want to call it, but never before to the extent that I have this year. This is due to two factors. One, the amount that I’ve been playing. Two, the increased levels of scripting in PES2008. I know why they do it, and I can accept it to a certain degree. But at times the scripting in PES2008 is not the subtlest it’s ever been.

Taking a break from the game has taken the edge off my recent dissatisfaction. Playing something else—including FIFA08 this year—always helps. Other games, no matter what they are, have their own faults. It doesn’t hurt to come back to PES with a refreshed gaming eye. My good mood lasted all of an entire PES play session (we’ll see how the next one plays out…).

I scored a nice goal in my first game back. Dos Santos, my journeyman midfielder (I end up calling every midfielder over the age of 25 a journeyman), got on the end of a slick passing move. I liked this goal (and thought it worthy of recording and posting) because of the nature of the finish. Back in ye olden days there used to be a striker called Jimmy Greaves whose goalscoring philosophy was simple: all you had to do was pass the ball into the net. Dos Santos’ goal would make Jimmy smile. It’s a first-time side-footed pass into the far side of the net:

I won that game but the results that followed were mixed. The final match of the session was an intense encounter with Almeria, one of the division’s supposed mediocrities. I took an early lead. Then the CPU unashamedly set about swindling me out of it with some ridiculously transparent massaging of the gameplay in the second half. I wasn’t happy with it, but at the same time I was engrossed in PES all over again.

The non-result against Almeria left me six points off the pace with four games left. Am I going to win the league this season? I don’t think so.

If I do win the league, it’ll be a carbon copy of what happened last season. I don’t think even PES2008’s helpful backstage manager is brazen enough to let me miraculously catch up with and overtake the top team two seasons in a row. Or is it?

  1. I think you’re mixing up Almeria with Heracles Almelo, resulting in your “Almela”. One is Spanish, the other is Dutch.

    Just a head’s up.

Good spot, Adriano, thanks. I’m not familiar with either team and only know them from this here Master League, with the resulting confusion. I’ve edited the post accordingly.

It’s like ‘Liebermann’ all over again…
