Mathieu scores!

Posted on February 11, 2008 by Greg Downs

The last few games before the mid-season negotiations were all intriguing in their own way. I forgot to mention a few days ago that I took a pasting in the first leg of the second round of the D2 Cup. PSV beat me 4-1 at their place. That game was a disaster. No wonder I conveniently forgot to talk about it…Still, my away goal gave me a sliver of hope. A 3-0 at my ground was not impossible.

I gave it a good go, but never got very far. I was 1-0 up at half time and in with a shout, but there’s a problem in PES when it comes to playing matches over two legs. If you are winning the second leg but the CPU team is still ahead on aggregate, it doesn’t know it’s ahead. It’ll react just as if it’s a one-off game.

I barely had a kick for the rest of the game as the CPU asserted itself, desperately seeking an ‘equaliser’ in the match despite still being two goals up on aggregate. The score stayed 1-0 and I was out of the Cup.

Never mind. I won the trophy last season. Now I can concentrate on the priority: the league.

I had a good 0-0 against Atalanta. Once again I sensed it was a match that I should have lost—that the game wanted me to lose after my great recent run. Atalanta’s midfield seemed to have 10 players in it, permanently. I couldn’t get through no matter what I tried.

Ahhh, but the next game…

It was against Spartak Moscow. I won 2-0. Camacho got my first goal, a nice volley from a long cross.

The second goal? It was Mathieu, getting his first goal for me in his new incarnation on next-gen PES2008. Nothing outrageously special, but it gets him off the mark:

And now I am top of the league at the halfway stage of the season.

Promotion? Definitely. I’ll need a good whipping if I don’t get promotion. The D2 Championship? Hopefully.

Next is the mid-season negotiations, where I plan to strengthen my squad. A couple more good players should see me through to the end.

—————–

So I attended hospital this morning (Monday 11th Feb) to have a wisdom tooth removed under local anaesthetic. After worrying about the procedure for weeks, I found there was no need. They have this new super-duper numbing agent nowadays that rendered the entire side of my mouth insensitive to any pain whatsoever. It was quite something. It wasn’t the faux-anaesthetic commonly used by dentists. The tooth came out easily enough with just a few tugs (hearing it come loose was the worst moment) and now I am back home.

I’ve just had a few games of PES in my current state. Ahhh, there’s nothing like PES… (The games weren’t the games that I talk about above, in the bulk of this Mathieu Scores! post. As ever, my real-time progress in PES is a couple of days ahead of the blog.)

The anaesthetic has yet to wear off, though. Something tells me I’ll have a wee bit of pain to deal with it when it does… I haven’t even made a start on tomorrow’s post yet. Hopefully I’ll get it done in the next hour or so before the jab wears off (it’s starting to wear off right now). But if tomorrow’s post appears later than usual, or is more incomprehensible than usual, or both, that’s why.

Yes, the pain does arrive, unfortunately. But it’s nothing that a few asprin and a whole lot of moaning can’t cure.

Congrats on the Mathieu goal! I think that even if he’s been downgraded from his PES 5 and 6 greatness, he’s still worth playing with because you like him. :)

    Private?

No needles? I had no such luck with a fancy anaesthetic!

Is it just me or does the ball seemingly disappear on that video before appearing in the back of the net? lol

Place your bets on 2mrw’s post just saying “ouch!”. no no greg will deliver the goods. hope so, booted my lass off the laptop, because my pc is KOed.

The goal that may start the floodgates, hopefully maybe, or keane & co may still have the last laugh.

ck – *touches wood* still no pain just yet beyond the odd twinge.

I love Mathieu and it’s far too early to say whether he’s been ‘borked’ in *next-gen* PES2008. Let’s remember that the two species of PES2008 – last-gen and next-gen – are different games with different gameplay.

Paul – nope, it was the good old NHS. I had three separate jabs in separate locations in my mouth. I kept my eyes shut so as not to see the needle, so I couldn’t tell you if the syringe was encased in silver and from the future or not… Whatever it was, for the first time ever during any kind of dental procedure, I could genuinely feel nothing. It was amazing.

…And if I was going to fake a video I’d make it a stupendously great goal! Sadly my mobile phone clips from certain angles at certain speeds creates that ‘vanishing ball’ effect. I’m thinking of investing in a proper digital camera, or even a DVD recorder, as I’m not happy with the quality of the clips.

Lakriss – I hope I’m not tempting fate but I think my mouth is going to be okay. I’ve got tomorrow’s post finished – it’ll be all about the mid-season negotiations.
