This year, PES has a soundtrack, with actual songs and everything.
One of those songs in particular has captured people’s imaginations like no other, and inspires the title of this post.
Anybody who already has the game will have heard and enjoyed the song in question. For those who have yet to hear the greatest song of all about the greatest game of all, there’s always YouTube:
The greatness of the Football (Soccer!) song is undisputed. However, for the sheer bravura of its complex melodic structure, I’d say the Futebol song runs it a close second. This song needs to be listened to for at least 32 seconds before its full complexity becomes apparent:
Wonderful stuff.

Oh my Lord. It’s . . . just so . . awful. What is with the scatting? WHISTLING?
Re: US football (soccer!), it’s the most played sport *by big numbers* for U.S. youths, but most serious atheletes play multiple sports, and when the time comes to choose one of them, they go elsewhere. Once we can get the b-tier basketball and gridiron guys (amazing players, but not tall/big enough for the pros) to play football (soccer), it’s on.
Imagine Jacque Vaughn, a former Kansas basketball point-guard; 6′4″, whippet-quick, 150 IQ, a born-leader and floor-general as a #10.
Or your average not-quite-big-enough for the NFL linebacker, with Gattuso’s attitude at 6′4″ 210 lbs. and a will to destroy sitting above your back four.
The guys are there already, they’re just not playing soccer right now.

My wife and I support the Kansas City Wizards in world football, and the Kansas Jayhawks (a university– my Alma Matter) in basketball and gridiron football. The Jayhawk basketball program is one of the legendary programs in the States (along with Duke, North Carolina and Kentucky), and basketball here in Kansas is what football is everywhere else in the world.
That said, every time we go to a Wizards game, it’s fabulous. They don’t play at a really high level (think mid-table Championship), but we saw Eddie Johnson get his second hat-trick in as many games to come back and beat New York (hate NY), and saw the Wizards score two goals in the final two minutes of injury time in order to come back and beat Colorado. Screamed myself hoarse.
This year, the Jayhawks have a chance at the national championship in gridiron football, so that’s pretty much trumping everything else around here at the moment.
For the record, a “Jayhawk” is a mythical bird that was the name anti-slavery guerillas used to use to describe themselves when they would go raid pro-slavery towns in the fighting prior to the Civil War. Quantrill’s Raid was famous (Missouri sacking Kansas), but in reality, Kansans sacked Missouri just as often.
So f*ck Missouri.
