Jubilant scenes at a cafe

A couple of good games and a nice goal or two always improve the mood. I’m still hovering above the relegation battlezone, but hopefully starting to pull away.

After his inexplicable wander away from the ball at the worst possible moment in the Chelsea game, I dropped Kim U Don’t and put Friedel back in the First XI.

I had another ridiculous game against Newcastle that ended 3-3, with Alan Smith playing like some kind of 1970s-style Brazilian superman throughout. Beware of Newcastle and Michael Owen in PES2008, is all I’ll say. They are licensed, after all…

Next I played Man Utd at home, and they won 2-1. But I was very happy to score a goal that briefly made the score 1-1 in the second half:

Nice set-up pass from Schwarz, and a super strike from Reyes. These kinds of goals, so plentiful in PES6 (a bit too plentiful, really), are hard to come by in PES2008. I like me some first-time shots, I do…

So I won a couple of games, I lost a couple of games, I drew a couple of games. All very ‘first season in the top flight’, really. With no chance of doing anything in the league this season, the Cup is my only way into Europe (and all of those lucrative fixtures).

I took on Copenhagen at home in the second round (had a bye in the first) and won 1-0. Then I drew 1-1 with them at their place. That was one tough game. They were all over me, and scored at the worst possible time: the very start. I’m talking literally 10 seconds into the game. Ouch.

I resisted the inevitable CPU onslaught (you know how it goes by now), and got my goal towards the end of the half.

Folan, starting for the first time in a while, received the ball in the centre-forward position. I noticed Schwarz in a bit of space for once and clipped a neat through-ball over the back line into his path. The defenders were almost upon him when he received the ball. It had to be a first-time shot… and in it flew, past the keeper’s dive, low into the opposite corner of the net. A fine goal, and most importantly an away goal. Not even I could mess up this one, and I didn’t.

good job on the cup, europe is the way forward!

(replying to the previous post I made) – I have the PC version with a PS2 controller. top player of course – and by god was the first half-season difficult with such poor stamina and poor players (i was 3rd bottom for a little while). I shipped in 7 new faces (unbelongers and youths) in the first mid-season, and with a pacey winger and a CF who could aim, i never looked back. Now with very good squad (nearing the end of my second season) – i barely lose. I have let in 39 goals in 25 games (19wins, 3 loses, 3 draws), but have scored over 80… Its a case of how many I score, not if or when… the odd huge mistake (such as a keeper running in the opposite direction) has allowed me to lose a few, but I have a winning streak stretching back about 12games now..

Makinwa, LuaLua are my main characters. high balance and high pace – they run down the wings and completely embarrass the goalkeepers – who cant seem to stop anything in this game. Ive scored so many goals which went straight into the keeper- who fumbled it into his own net. You just need to shoot from any distance and it goes in

p.s. I love the game, dont get me wrong!

I cant wait for Div1 because I find competition in the team with Wayne Rooney which means that player stats deeply influence how good the opponent will be. In Div1 the big boys should give me a good game.

  3. LaKriss says:

Following up on david. i also found LuaLua is a demon on this game, but i have Mitea instead of Makinwa. Then again no one can stop my yank from the west……Dotan!! he’s my
    donadel.
Have yet to get shimizu or schwarz though because, well they haven’t appeared yet. oh well back to my losing streak, there goes my 1st place in div 2 and cup hopes :(

Btw i came up with a theory why you lose annoyingly and have those “mishaps”. it’s because pes is and always will try to be a realistic football game as much as possible thats why we play it. Is it not? becauses its more real than fifa. Something along those lines anyway. Still makes you shout at downs and sing with the ups.

@david – don’t you find that the amount of goals conceded in PES2008 is peculiar? I do. By this stage in previous PES years I’d be conceding no more than 10 per season on average. Last season in PES2008 I scored 59 goals (double the amount of the next-best scorers in the Division), but conceded 50 (double the amount of the next-worst conceders). I find it impossible right now to stop the CPU when its mind seems made up to score. I hope things change.

@LaKriss – I often find that I ’shout at Downs’ in the mirror during one or all of my bathroom breaks during a PES session…

Thanks both for the tip re. LuaLua. Thing is I already have attacking speed demons and they’re so far not doing me much good. And as for Mitea – I vaguely recall having him in my PES4 ML team at one point. If I don’t get Mathieu soon I’ll be hunting down Prieto (the poor man’s Mathieu), and then I’ll look for Mitea. Maybe I’ll get both. Or all three. The team ranking thing is seriously hampering my transfers this year.

Well congrats on the results! I wonder what you have to do to get a “C” rating!

“I wonder what you have to do to get a ā€œCā€ rating!”

    — I’m starting to wonder that too, ck. There’s a progress bar beneath the current rating, and it’s been about a third full for three seasons now. I guess the pattern of my results – one step forward, two steps back, two steps forward, one step back – has kept it that way. Seeing as I need to be a B or an A to sign the really top players, I think Ive got a couple of hard seasons ahead of me yet. Assuming I don’t go down this season of course. That might set me back a long way if it happens. It mustn’t happen…
